We made it after lots of traveling. Our 14 hour flight was more like 15 hours and we missed our connection in Dubai. They automatically rebooked us so we had 40 min to go through security and check in to our next flight. the next plane was waiting for us so we made it. We flew on an indian airline instead of arab emirates. we got lots of food on the flights, 2 meals and a snack on the long flight and an Indian meal on the india flight. It was good, they asked "vegetarian or non-veg." it's going to be pretty easy for me to eat vegetarian here. we also were told our bags wouldn't make the india flight. but i guess they decided to wait for the bags because we sat on the plane for 45 minutes. We were very happy to see our bags in India. I exchanged some money and we had a driver waiting for us outside the airport. It was a van that was a perfect size for the 7 of us. We will have the same Indian driver until may 18. we drove about 45 min to get to our hotel. we saw some interesting sights on the road, trucks stuffed full of chickens, rickshaws (like a motorcycle with seats in the back and a covered top), trucks with people sitting on the back, and lots of honking. it was 5:45 am so we saw the sunrise. People were out going to work already. I wasn't sure what the hotel was going to be like as we turned down an alley, but it is really nice. I'm sharing a room with one other student, there's AC, western toilets, and a flat screen tv!! There's also a rooftop pool that has an awesome view. People have been really nice so far, especially when they serve food.

At the hotel we were given a red dot on our foreheads and a fresh flower lei (not sure what the Indian word for it is). The traffic here is crazy! We had to try and cross the road and it is pretty scary. We met our travel agent Sapna and she gave us carved wooden cases with wooden toys in it. She is awesome! We stopped at an old palace and took some pictures. It was all wooden and carved. My favorite display was a carved wooden tiger attacking a British soldier that was an organ. We weren't allowed to take pictures of the displays, though. Then we went to a modern shopping area that had lots of American stores. The prices were decent but I'm not interested in American clothes while I'm in India. We looked at some cool and colorful sandals but my feet were too big for them! My ankles were really swollen after the flights so it looks kind of strange.

We went to a 5 star hotel for dinner and sat outside. It rained and so it was fairly cool. I am loving the food here! It was a buffet so there was tons of really good food to eat. We also saw lots of beautiful saris and younger people in some more modern, western clothes. There were also cows on the roads, which we thought we would see. I was surprised to see so many parks and trees around. Apparently Bangalore is the Garden City of India. There's also lots of trash on the ground, which is not surprising in a developing country.

It's finally here! I'm glad the flight leaves in the afternoon so I had time to pack all day. I have a suitcase, backpack and purse. I keep checking my bags to make sure I'm not forgetting anything. I have the essentials, though: passport, money, and plane info.

We fly from Wilmington to Atlanta and then have a 3 hour layover. Then we have a 14 hour flight from Atlanta to Dubais. We stop in Dubais for about an hour and I doubt we even get off the plane. Then we fly from Dubais to Bangalore. We’ll arrive in India at 3am their time on May 11.

I’m kind of nervous and not looking forward to the 24 hours plus of travel. At least I will be traveling with classmates. I also need to finish reading “One Night at the Call Center” as part of the course. It is really interesting so far, about young Indians working at an appliance call center.

We will be traveling in southern India with the course for 2 weeks. On May 23 a few of my classmates and I will stay longer and fly to New Delhi in northern India. We will see the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Ganges River at holy Varanasi.

I bought some candy, toys, cards, and colorful pencils for kids on the street and kids in the orphanage we will visit. I also have a flash drive with our group presentation on Women in the United States. We will present the talk to womens studies students at the University of Mysore.

I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to update the blog depending on availability of internet and free time. I will be returning on June 1st and will update the blog and pictures then!

We had our last actual India class yesterday. When we are in India as part of our grade we have to conduct at least 5 interviews. We had 3 guests come in to practice our interviews. We talked to a husband and wife from India, and a chemistry professor who teaches at UNCW who is from India. They were all born in India and then moved to the United States. The husband came to the US to get a PhD in Robotics Engineering while his wife was doing her residency in India. He got a job at Corning so his wife moved here and had to redo her residency and take the Boards again. The chemistry professor came to the US for a PhD in Chemistry at Penn State. His parents wanted him to get married since he was already 31. They put out a classified ad in the newspaper in India looking for Indian girls in the US. They put together a list of girls and sent it to the professor. He just laughed at the list and never contacted anyone. Two months later a guy called him asking how much money he makes, what kind of projects he's working on. He was calling for his sister who was one of the Indian girls. The professor said I'm not interested. He realized he better call the other girl who had his number. She was a student at LSU. He called and said “I’m not interested in marriage right now, I don’t want you to be waiting around for me.” She said, “Who’s waiting around? I have my own things to do.” Then her parents tried to set her up with another guy and he wouldn’t contact her but he asked about her where she worked. So she called the chemistry professor to tell him about it. Then they started talking more frequently and eventually met. They had a blast together but he was in Pennsylvania and she was in Louisiana. They went on a road trip together and had a lot of fun. His parents asked about her and the professor admitted they were dating. After hanging up the phone he got a ton of calls from relatives congratulating him on the upcoming marriage. He didn’t say they weren’t getting married but just didn’t make any plans. Eventually the two decided to get married, but they were living long distance. He got a job in Nebraska and she was working in Chicago. The phone calls from relatives didn’t stop until they had their first child. It was a pretty amusing story.

I have been really busy with the end of the semester. I have 4 papers due, one lab final, and 3 other finals all around the same time. I just gave a presentation on a paper I wrote for the India class called "Environmental Management of the Ganges River in the 21st Century." The presentation went really well and the class (all political science/public administration majors) seemed to be interested in the talk. The Ganges River is a very important spiritual and cultural icon in India, people see it as an actual "godess." They bathe in the river to receive eternal salvation (called moksha), which is release from the cycle of reincarnation. The river is supposed to purify them. Although since so many people live in the river basin (one tenth of the world population), there are many pollutants in the water. Raw sewage, runoff from agricultural fields, and industrial waste all goes into the river. This has health impacts on the people, spreading disease, and in some cases causing cancer. I am excited to visit Varanasi which is a very holy site along the Ganges River with 3 of my classmates after the actual course is over.

I will be traveling again with UNCW in May of 2010 for 2 weeks to southern India. I will then stay an extra week in India with two of my classmates so we can visit Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. We are working out the details but we are very excited for this trip!
